International Network for Bamboo and Rattan Bamboo and Energy Efficient Housing in China

The Nature Conservancy of China is teaming up with the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan and several other Chinese organizations to demonstrate all of these uses of bamboo. Initially, the group plans demonstration projects of energy efficient homes and buildings that greatly reduce heating requirements. These structures will also make maximum use of bamboo in the construction itself. Second, it will plant bamboo plantations in key areas along the Yangtze River. Third, two demonstration kilns for turning bamboo into a fuel similar to coal will be constructed. Finally, local bamboo businesses will receive technical assistance to increase their capabilities and extend their reach. These activities will collectively help reduce the rates of deforestation and improve energy efficiency in this critical part of our ecosystem and world.
