Why is it important?
Nuclear power accidents present one of the greatest threats of environmental contamination from radiation. Relicensing of old nuclear power plants and the deregulation of the electricity industry increase the likelihood that power plants will be operated past their design lifetimes and with substandard safety procedures.

What needs to be done?
Siting and relicensing of nuclear power plants in all countries needs to be conducted with strong public participation and stringent safety reviews.
Safe and energy-efficient alternatives to nuclear power need to be vigorously pursued.
